Coorg, officially known as Kodagu . Tiny district in the state of Karnataka is the Biggest Producer of Coffee, also referred as India’s Coffee Bowl. This unspoilt “Country of Million Hills” is situated on the slopes of Western Ghats. It is a Tourist paradise for nature lovers, Often called the Kashmir of south.

Earlier Coorg was ruled by The Haleri Dynasty between 1600 to 1834, later British ruled Kodagu from  1834 till India’s Independence in 1947.Britishers referred it as “Scotland of India”.  It remained as a separate state (Coorg state) but then it was merged with the state of Mysore, now Karnataka.


Tradition and culture

Kodavas the dominant  community of Kodagu. They have rich oral traditions some of their traditional folk songs have been compiled into the Pattole Palome. The Pattole Palame, a collection of Kodava folksongs and traditions compiled in the early 1900s by Nadikerianda Chinnappa, was first published in 1924.

Most of the Kodagu natives wear the traditional Kodaga costume.

 Men wear ‘Kupyas’ (knee-length half-sleeved coats) over a full-sleeved white shirt. ‘Chale’ i.e. a maroon and gold sash is tied at the waist and an ornately carved silver dagger known as ‘Peechekathi’ is tucked into it. ‘Odikathi’ is yet another knife that is tucked into the Chale at the back. Furthermore, a chain with a minuscule gun and a dagger hanging onto it to give them a martial look.

The saris worn by women are pleated at the back and the pallu fixed with a brooch is also wrapped in a unique way. They wear either a full-sleeved or three-quarter sleeved blouse and cover their head with a scarf. A traditional gold beaded necklace (Jomalae) and a gem-pendant (Kokkethathi) is widely worn by the women of Kodagu.

By Train

The nearest railway stations are Thalassery and Kannur in Kerala and Mangalore, Mysore and Hassan are the nearest in Karnataka. Mysore jn is 95km away.

By Road

The drive to Coorg is an experience in itself

Coorg is well connected by road with all major cities in Karnataka. Cities like Mysore (120 km), Mangalore (135 km), Bangalore (260 km), and Hassan (115 km) are linked by excellent roadways with Coorg.

Abbey Falls

Abbey falls is one spectacular spot 5 kms from the town of Madikeri in Coorg From a height of around 70 ft, the water of the Abbey cascades down with a roaring sound. To have the best view of the waterfall, the authorities have connected a suspension bridge just infront of the gushing waterbody. Owing to the picturesque sight of the waterfall and lush green surroundings, Abbey falls are amongst the best picnic spots in the region.

Namdroling Monastery

It is vast, splendid and extremely beautiful.  It is so peaceful inside the temple that you can sit and meditate. This has multiple monasteries where prayers are being offered.

Golden Temple

Visited  by tourists in large numbers. It houses over 7,000 monks and students today.

Talakaveri (Bhagamandala)

) Talakaveri or Talacauvery, the originating point of River Cauvery, is a holy pilgrimage site for the followers of Hindu religion. 1276 meters above the sea level, this site is placed amidst the Brahmagiri hills from whose eastern slopes, the holy river emerges.

One of the main tourist attraction of near Coorg, these waterfalls are also called Lakshmana Tirtha Falls. This freshwater fall is 60 m in height and gushes swiftly downwards from lush green mountains
